Sinus infections
« on: August 22, 2011, 02:46:02 PM »
Sinus infections are usually classified by their length. An acute sinus infection typically lasts around two weeks. In some people, treatment is not immediately effective, so the infection can last several months and is known as a chronic sinus infection.

To treat acute sinus infections two problems must be solved: the infection and the sinus congestion. The infection can be treated with antibiotics taken for at least ten to fourteen days. It is essential to continue the treatment until it is finished, otherwise the bacteria can multiply and become resistant to the prescribed antibiotic. Saline solutions and nasal decongestant sprays can help ease congestion. However, sprays containing phenylephrine are effective, but should not be used for more than three days in a row, because they then can worsen congestion and swelling of the sinuses mucus membranes.

There is no sure way to prevent sinus infections, but you can reduce the risk of catching one by using medications for hay fever and other allergies. For more information, just talk to your pharmacist, an accessible health professional.
